Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr., was born in Roswell, New Mexico, to Erma Louise Swope and LTC Henry John Deutschendorf, Sr.,an Air Force officer and flight instructor of German ancestry. In his autobiography, Take Me Home, Denver described his life as the eldest son of a family shaped by a stern father who could never show his love for his children. Denver's mother's family was Irish and German Catholic, and it was they who imbued Denver with a love of music. At the age of 12, Denver received a 1910 Gibson acoustic jazz guitar from his grandmother. He learned to play well enough to perform at local clubs by the time he was in college. He adopted the surname "Denver" after the capital of his favorite state, Colorado, when Randy Sparks suggested that "Deutschendorf" wouldn't fit comfortably on a marquee. Denver attended Texas Technological College in Lubbock and sang in a folk-music group called "The Alpine Trio" while pursuing architecture studies.Denver dropped out of the Texas Tech School of Engineering in 1963, and moved to Los Angeles, California, where he sang in the smoky underground folk clubs. In 1969, Denver abandoned the band life to pursue a solo career and released his first album for RCA Records, Rhymes and Reasons. Two years prior Denver had made a self-produced demo recording of some of the songs he played at his concerts. He included in the demo a song called "Babe I Hate to Go," later renamed "Leaving on A Jet Plane." Denver made several copies and gave ...

Early Writings (1910-1917) Best

Early Writings (1910-1917) Overview
Walter Benjamin became a published writer at the age of seventeen. Yet the first stirrings of this most original of critical minds—penned during the years in which he transformed himself from the comfortable son of a haute-bourgeois German Jewish family into the nomadic, uncompromising philosopher-critic we have since come to appreciate—have until now remained largely unavailable in English. Early Writings, 1910-1917 rectifies this situation, documenting the formative intellectual experiences of one of the twentieth century's most resolutely independent thinkers.
Here we see the young Benjamin in his various roles as moralist, cultural critic, school reformer, and poet-philosopher. The diversity of interest and profundity of thought characteristic of his better-known work from the 1920s and 30s are already in evidence, as we witness the emergence of critical projects that would occupy Benjamin throughout his intellectual career: the role of the present in historical remembrance, the relationship of the intellectual to political action, the idea of truth in works of art, and the investigation of language as the veiled medium of experience.
Even at this early stage, a recognizably Benjaminian way of thinking comes into view—a daring, boundary-crossing enterprise that does away with classical antitheses in favor of the relentlessly-seeking critical consciousness that produced the groundbreaking works of his later years. With the publication of these early writings, our portrait of one of the most significant intellects of the twentieth century edges closer to completion.

The 1910s (American Popular Culture Through History) Overview
The decade of the 1910s saw the United States rise above strictly European cultural influences as the mixing of race, ethnicity, class, and gender yielded colorful fusions within American society. Historian David Blanke delves into the cornucopia of activities, trends, and events that shaped and enriched the day-to-day lives of Americans in this decade. Twelve scrupulously researched chapters bring to life all of the important aspects of popular culture in 1910s America: from Birth of a Nation to the Black Sox scandal, the Teddy Bear to Tarzan, breakfast cereal to the first brassiere. This lead title in Greenwood's forthcoming American Popular Culture Through History series shows the many facets of American society merging to form the beginnings of the United States' eclectic 20th century culture.
This debut volume launches a series designed to be advanced yet accessible, informative yet fun. Students researching the history of American art, film, literature, music, and sports will be taken beyond the names and dates in their textbooks and learn about the interests, styles, and tastes of past Americans. Series volumes will also include a timeline of significant cultural events as well as a cost comparison list of commonly used items. This valuable reference resource will introduce students to things, activities, and people that enriched and defined the lives of Americans in the seminal years of 1910 to 1919. These collages of culture will enrich the research of high school or college students and help them see how Americans' lives, aspirations, dreams, even the idea of what it is to be American, have evolved in the past—and will continue to change in the future.

Vol.1 pt 17 Secret Mysteries of Americas Beginnings
Secret Mysteries of America's Beginnings Volume 1, The New Atlantis, unfolds the fascinating history behind the founding of America, and exposes the esoteric underbelly of its design. Why is Washington DC build on the 77th Meridian? Are the Revolutionary War cities really built in perfect alignment with Stonehenge? If America was founded as a Christian nation, why are many of its symbols based on Pagan traditions? There is no doubt that much of America's national heritage was Christian, but just as a coin has two sides, our national heritage has a second side - one based squarely on occult secret societies and their values. To find the answer to these questions, we follow the journey of secret societies from England to the New World and learn of their ancient hope: to rebuild the lost empire of Atlantis. In the 16th century, Sir Francis Bacon was at the helm of the secret societies in England. When Bacon penned his classic work, "The New Atlantis" he believed that America and Atlantis were one and the same. He outlined his vision for the perfect society, and some suggest the program he set forth has been the driving force behind the course of modern history. While he did not originate the concept, it was Bacon who articulated an ancient plan to be carried out by all the secret orders. As Chief of the Rosicrucians and the first Grand Master of modern Freemasonry, Bacon sent his followers to the new world. A 1910 Newfoundland stamp with his image upon it reads, "Lord Bacon ...

Frank Lloyd Wright: The Lost Years, 1910-1922: A Study Of Influence Overview
FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT: THE LOST YEARS, 1910-1922 is a landmark study that reconstructs Wright’s early travels to Europe, provides the definitive history of his famous Wasmuth publications, and introduces an experimental Primitivist phase in the architect’s work that followed his “First Golden Age.” Challenging conventional assumptions about influence, this pioneering work also reveals for the first time Wright’s interest in feminism that grew from his relationship with Mamah Borthwick, his doomed lover, and shows how contact with Europe in 1909-10 stimulated Wright to expand his design process and revolutionize his methods of making ornament. It reconstructs Wright’s travels in Europe and his return to America.Totally original and based on unpublished archival materials, this readable book is a landmark in studies on Frank Lloyd Wright and a significant contribution to the history of modern architecture.Customer Reviews
